Last Thursday, February 24, 2011 hosted the First Conference on "Food Sovereignty and GMO in Andalusia" in the Old Hospital of San Juan de Dios de Jaén. Sort them by Ecologists in Action Andalucía Jaén and GMO-Free Platform (avocado), in collaboration with UCE-Jaén, Jaén FACUA-COAG-Jaén.
The aim of this conference was to publicize the facts about GM crops and their impact on different areas, so nothing better than the real participation of involved to raise awareness, objectively, their points of view and opinions.
Following the presentations, exhibits and panel discussion that took place on the world of transgenics, the conclusions reached were:
GMOs, currently have neither produced any positive aspect , both environmental, agricultural, livestock and in relation to consumers. At
agriculture and livestock, according to COAG, pose no performance increase, and if an increase in resistance to pests, increased use of agrochemicals, genetic pollution, loss of agricultural biodiversity, dependence on multinational market rejection, destruction of the family model of the agricultural enterprise, an apparent conflict with the commitment to quality and food safety and incompatibility with farming.
A consumer level, as UCE and FACUA, it is significant that GM does not provide consumers any benefit, both in taste, health or money and it a great ignorance and misinformation about the percentage of modified organisms (GMOs GM) is in the food. Also in the European Union, the risk assessment system is very permissive and irregular in this area, causing massive uncertainty about the risks that these foods may make long-term, which derives the great rejection consumers to these products.
However, if GM reveals some negative aspects that can be differentiated into three levels of study:
A socio-economic , noted that GM is providing only a few succulent benefits multinational monopolize the seed market (Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont, Dow, Bayer CropScience, BASF), while that of the plant. Being stressed the irreversible damage to the structure of agricultural producers and local farmers, with the encouragement of speculation and control over food. At

But most alarming is the total lack of control over the precautionary principle and foresight in marketing this type of genetically modified foods, as there are no safety studies or medium or long term that can ensure that no negative side effects ( GMOs equating to pharmaceuticals that require years of study and screening.)
But the indisputable problem is environmental level, and currently is occurring genetic pollution and a serious attack on biodiversity result genetic changes are occurring in other plants and resistance to many insects. Although in Andalusia, the number of hectares under cultivation is very small percentage speaking, it is unacceptable that the administration tolerate and support such experiences in open spaces since the damage on all living things are unpredictable and irreversible (because there is no return back) and of course pollution and incompatibility with organic farming.
In Andalusia and despite the enormous environmental problems in agriculture, health and socio-economic level, that just described, is still promoting and authorizing the cultivation, testing and marketing of GMO .
Food sovereignty of Andalusia and Spain is seriously threatened, because the cultivation of GM and its surroundings, benefiting neither producers nor consumers, and environmentally sound, economically benefit only the oligopoly of companies manipulate the people claiming that GM is the panacea for the world food supply.
Given this serious situation, which is not yet aware most people, Ecologists in Action Jaén highlights not only his total agreement with previous findings held after the conference, but his position remains in defense food sovereignty and submit the basis for Jaén be declared GMO Free Zone (ZLT).
